Health experts have raised concerns over stroke-related deaths and disabilities linked to delayed emergency care, warning that failure to recognise symptoms early and seek immediate medical attention continues to put lives at risk in Nigeria.

The warning comes as Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark World Stroke Day on October 29, 2026, with Stroke Action Nigeria, the Nigerian Society of Neurological Sciences and the Nigerian Stroke Organization intensifying efforts to educate the public on stroke warning signs and the need for prompt medical intervention.

The organisations are marking the day with a public awareness rally under the campaign message, “Know the Signs. #ActFAST. Every Minute Counts,” aimed at taking lifesaving information directly to communities.

In a statement authorised by the Chief Executive of Stroke Action Nigeria and Board Member of the World Stroke Organisation, Dr Rita Melifonwu, the groups described stroke as a major public health challenge in Nigeria, noting that late detection and inadequate emergency response contribute to preventable fatalities.

The campaign promotes the FAST approach to identifying common stroke warning signs: Face drooping on one side, Arm weakness or difficulty raising one arm, Speech that is slurred or difficult to understand, and Time to seek emergency medical help immediately.

The organisations stressed that stroke is a medical emergency requiring urgent attention, even when symptoms appear mild or disappear after a short period.

They also identified high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, physical inactivity and unhealthy diets as modifiable risk factors that can increase the likelihood of stroke.

As part of efforts to improve awareness among young people, Stroke Action Nigeria disclosed that it had conducted awareness engagements in four secondary schools under its Stroke Champions School Engagement Programme.

The initiative is designed to equip students with the knowledge to recognise stroke symptoms and understand the appropriate emergency response.

The organisations urged Nigerians to learn the warning signs, adopt preventive measures and seek prompt medical care when stroke symptoms occur, stressing that early recognition and timely treatment are essential to reducing stroke-related deaths and disabilities.
