IBB Tasks NASS Leadership On Inclusive GovERNMENT

The Team New Nigeria (TNN), a pro-democracy and good governance group, has congratulated the Senate president, Godswill Akpabio, on his emergence as the chairman of the 10th National Assembly, urging him to ensure inclusiveness.

TNN, in a statement signed yesterday by its grand patron and former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, noted that despite the challenging circumstances, the authorities demonstrated their commitment to adhering to the rules of the National Assembly and democratic traditions.

The former Nigerian leader, described Sen Akpabio’s election, as well-deserved and a vindication of the trust and confidence reposed in him by members of the National Assembly, and by the governing All Progressives Congress (APC).

The statement reads in parts: “Team New Nigeria delightfully uses this opportunity to felicitate with other Principal Officers of the 10th National Assembly.

“This new team of capable and experienced men and women ushers in a new era of intensified government service delivery. We in the TNN therefore, hope that the National Assembly, under the leadership of Akpabio will succeed in overcoming her recent challenges, and reinforce her position as a champion of democracy, rule of law and good governance in Nigeria.

“A transparent, strong, united, prospering National Assembly is a great force for progress In Nigeria.

“The relations between the National Assembly and TNN are firmly rooted in the common Struggle for the promotion of good governance and democratic values in Nigeria, and also in our shared commitment to the building of new Nigeria on principles of democracy, Respect for human rights and the rule of law.

“TNN looks forward to the swift formation of an inclusive Government that can accelerate the implementation of reforms necessary to set Nigeria on the path to recovery.

“TNN equally counts on the new National Assembly to urgently adopt all legislation necessary to stabilize the economy and improve governance.’’

It said Team New Nigeria shall continue to encourage measures to enhance women’s political participation and representation, including in the new government.

The  pro-democracy and good governance group said it looks forward to working closely with the National Assembly to improve the living conditions of Nigerians.

“Warm congratulations, once again, to the principal officers and the entire members of the 10th National Assembly. We wish them well and assure each one of them of our unwavering support as they begin the critical task of serving the needs and aspirations of our people,” the statement added.
