SEMA Warns Flood-prone Sokoto Communities

Flood-prone communities, especially those close to riverine areas predicted to be possibly affected by this year’s 2023 flood are advised to heed to the expert’s early warning in the state.

The wake-up call was made by the director of relief and rehabilitation, Sokoto Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Malam Mustapha Umar, when featuring in a radio programme.

According to a prediction released by NEMA, eleven states including Sokoto, are listed to be affected by floods.

Commenting on the prediction, Malam Mustapha Umar categorically stated that “Flood is real, and there is no dead hero; therefore, there is need for the communities leaving around the riverine areas as a matter urgency to immediately vacate for them to be safe and protected from any forms of flood disaster.”

Some of the advice offered to the flood prone communities in the state include listening and adhering to experts’ advice with regards to the 2023 flood prediction.

They said residents should be ready to leave the flood prone areas and locations as there is need for gutters and drainages to be desilted and evacuated all the time and people should stop building on waterways among others.
