Abia State commissioner for information and culture, Prince Okey Kanu, has said the administration of Dr Alex Otti cannot neglect the media.

Kanu stated this yesterday at an interaction with members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in his office in Umuahia, the state capital.

“I don’t think the administration can successfully deliver on its campaign promises if it detaches itself from the media as a major stakeholder in the society,” he said.

The commissioner said the numerous achievements of the administration right from day one in office would not be known to the people of the state and outsiders until the media bring them to their notice.

“Your position as the watchdog of the society behooves us to establish and maintain a good working relationship with you. Our achievements must be reported in full to the world,” he noted.

The commissioner, who said the administration would work with the chapel for the development of the state, appealed to them to be objective in their reportage to sustain the people’s confidence and trust in them.

“Otti is media-friendly and appreciates what you are doing already for the administration.

“I have also taken note of your challenges and assure you that they would be addressed as part of our bargain for the relationship,” he said.

Earlier, the chairman of the chapel, Chief Obinna Ibe, said they came to congratulate Kanu for the appointment and to pledge their loyalty and support for the administration.

He said the chapel was aware of the dangers of fake news to their practice in particular and the society in general, adding that the members are ready to partner with the administration to put their producers in check.
