JUST-IN: Popular Islamic Cleric, Dr. Ismail Surty, Dies In UK

The death has occurred of a highly respected and global Islamic scholar, Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Hafiz Ismail Surty.

He was described as a beloved father, grandfather, and esteemed teacher, in a terse statement by Bashir Gwandu issued in Abuja on Wednesday.

The statement said Dr. Surty’s departure has left his loved ones and the community in deep mourning.

 

Dr. Surty was widely respected for his compassionate nature as a family friend to many.

He was leading prayers at the Birmingham Central Mosque and The University of Birmingham Mosque. He was also a Professor at Birmingham University.

 

Here in Nigeria, he was the presenter of the popular TV program, ‘The Light of Islam’. He was also a regular figure on Sokoto TV in the 1980s.

 

The Janazah prayer to honour Dr. Surty will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at 1:45pm at the Birmingham Central Mosque, located at 180 Belgrave Middleway, United Kingdom.

Following the Janazah prayer, the burial will take place at 3:00pm at Handsworth Cemetery, located on Oxhill Rd in Handsworth, Birmingham.
