The World Bank-supported Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRiN) in Kaduna State has trained secondary school girls on how to produce reusable pads.

The Kaduna State project manager of ANRiN, Dr. Zainab Muhammad-Idris, disclosed this yesterday during the training in Kaduna.

She said the aim was to enhance good menstrual hygiene practices among adolescent girls.

She noted that the training was necessary in view of the current economic situation that makes buying of sanitary pads a huge challenge for young girls.

“The training is on how to produce reusable pads themselves, especially in this economic  situation where their ability to get sanitary pads is a challenge. The girls would be equipped with the knowledge and skills to produce their own reusable pads that can help them maintain good mensural hygiene”.

“One of the key challenges bedevilling the girl-child is how to maintain good menstrual hygiene. The training, therefore, was specifically designed to give the young girls the opportunity to learn more about menstrual cycles, its challenges and some of the hindrances to educational goals.

“The training will also ensure that young girls practice good personal hygiene, which in the long run, will translate to having a good reproductive health system. This will ensure society’s survival and propagation once they become adults,” the official said.

She said the ANRiN project was designed to increase the utilisation of quality, cost-effective nutrition services for pregnant and lactating mothers, adolescent girls, and children under five years.
