Professor Salihu Mohammed Niworu of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai in Niger State has said corruption, primitive wealth accumulation and maladministration are responsible for the current wave of over throw of governments in some African countries.
He said with good governance and security of the situations would get better.
Niworu, a professor of Political Economy spoke at the 20th lecture series held at the campus auditorium in Lapai with the theme; Primitive Capital Accumulation and Poverty in Nigeria: Where is the Place of Nation Building.
He chided Nigerian governments that celebrate the construction of dual carriage ways in cities rather than investing in the construction of rural road networks and bridges in ungoverned spaces across the country.
He called for the creation of a more efficient local government system with full financial autonomy in order to bring massive development to the grassroots.
He said the best way to good governance is to create more Local governments and make them financially independent.
Niworu added that with a very good local government system governance and security would be better.
The don maintained that Nigerian leaders should always reflect the teachings of their religion with fear of God rather than accumulating public wealth.
He charged leaders in the country to ensure deliberate policies, programmes and activities that would drastically reduce the current high poverty level if the country must end insecurity and other social vices.
In his remarks, the vice chancellor, Professor Abu Kasim Adamu who applauded the lecturer urged government at all levels to do more to get rid of poverty in the country.
