Eight corps members abducted in Zamfara State on their way to Sokoto for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp have spent over 59 days in kidnappers’ den.

It would be recalled that the corps members were kidnapped on August 17 on their way from Uyo to Sokoto.

There were earlier reports that three of the corps members were released after paying an undisclosed ransom, but their families said they were still in the kidnappers’ den.

The corps members from Akwa Ibom State were travelling in an AKTC bus to Sokoto State for their national assignment.

Although parents of the victims have expressed dissatisfaction that the NYSC authorities and security agencies were not putting in more efforts to secure the release of their children, no progress has been made as at the time of filling this report.

As of the time of filing this report yesterday, sources close to their families, said they were still in captivity.

The director-general of NYSC, Brig. Gen. Yush’au Ahmed, recently said the management of the scheme was making frantic efforts towards the early release of the corps members.

NYSC director of press and public relations, Eddy Megwa, in a recent interview with LEADERSHIP also said, “It is still working with security agencies to ensure that it secure their release.”

The abductors are reportedly demanding an additional N200 million as ransom, after collecting N13 million earlier paid by the victims’ families.

It would be recalled that the families earlier released N5 million of the initially discussed total ransom of N13 million, while the abductors gave them until September 6 to pay the balance of N8 million.
