A total of 50,000 persons have been registered by the Ekiti State government to benefit from its Widow and Orphans Hope Project (WAOH) Initiative

The wife of the Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, who spoke at the unveiling of the programme yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, said 350 indigent widows received empowerment materials and 25 indigent students got cheques of N100,000 for their scholarships.

The first lady said the initiative was designed to make life meaningful for the vulnerable people in the state and alleviate their poverty.

Mrs Oyebanji, who urged everyone to come to the aid of the widows and orphans, said the project helped them to attain self-sufficiency in the society

She disclosed that the project which has three categories: active, semi and inactive widows, said over 30,000 widows and 2,000 orphans had been registered in the state to benefit from the programme.

The widows, according to her, would be empowered with materials such as sewing machines, garri processing machines, refrigerator, grinding machines, feeding allowances and raw food will be given to the aged widows, among others.
