The Rotary District 9125 governor, Sagreb Sani Ahmad on Tuesday at Kano yesterday, told newsmen that out of the 200 countries affected by polio endemic across the world only two are now remaining due to the success achieved over the years in the fight against polio.

He mentioned Pakistan and Afghanistan as the only countries where the endemic is still on, as 99.99 per cent of the disease has been eradicated.

He said Rotary Club International is still on its feet on the polio eradication initiative sensitizing the public to ensure that complacency does not sent in. Those who have been victims are now being supported with hand driven tricycles to ameliorate their situation and support their lives with means of mobility.

“We are here in celebration of Polio Day which is a day that has been set aside for the purpose of recognizing the efforts that have been put into the polio eradication initiative. And also to appreciate all the partners that have been involved in the polio eradication initiative and also the staff and all other parties that have been involved in this.

“It is also to sensitize people on the progress so far in respect of polio eradication and also to keep people abreast of the fact that we need to continue the effort so as to be able to ensure that total eradication of polio is achieved.

“The progress achieved since 1985 when rotary international became involved in polio eradication initiative which is by the house-to-house campaign in an effort to see that all zero dose children are captured.

“Apart from that, the records have it that 99.99 percent of polio has been eradicated. So what we have is a very small percentage. We are trying all we can to see that complacency does not set in, and we continue the effort to eradicate polio completely from the face of the earth,” he said.
