Why Active Listening Is Important In Parent-child Relationship

Parenting is one of the most important things you’ll ever do.  It’s also one of the most challenging.  Raising a child is a complex process, but it’s worth it when you see them grow into a responsible and happy adult.  Today, I’ll share some of the most important things you can do as a parent to help your child thrive.

Setting Boundaries: Setting boundaries.  It’s important for parents to set boundaries for their children, so they know what is and isn’t acceptable behavior.  This can help children feel safe and secure, and it also helps them learn how to behave in the world.  Boundaries can be about things like bedtime, chores, screen time, and more. Let’s say you want to set a boundary around bedtime.  You could say something like, “It’s time for bed now, and I expect you to be in bed by 8pm.”  Then, it’s important to be consistent and follow through on that boundary.  You could say something like, “If you’re not in bed by 8pm, there will be consequences, such as no screen time the next day.”  Consistency is really important when it comes to setting boundaries.  Children need to know that there will be consequences for their actions, and that you’re not just going to give in to them.

Praising good behavior: One way to praise your child’s good behavior is to use specific, positive language.  For example, instead of saying “You did a good job,” you could say something like “I really like how you shared your toys with your sister today.”  This helps your child understand exactly what they did well and gives them specific praise. Specific praise is much more effective than general praise.  Another aspect of praising good behavior is to be sincere and genuine.  Children can tell when you’re not being genuine, and they won’t feel as good about their accomplishments.

Disciplin: One important thing to remember about discipline is that it should be consistent and fair.  For example, if your child breaks a rule, the consequence should be the same every time.  You also don’t want to discipline your child out of anger or frustration. Instead, try to stay calm and explain why the behavior was wrong. Another important aspect of discipline is to focus on teaching, rather than punishment.  It’s not enough to just tell your child “no” or to take away something they enjoy.  Instead, try to explain why the behavior was wrong and what they can do differently next time.  That way, they’ll learn from the experience and be less likely to repeat the behavior.

Establishing a good relationship with your child: It’s clear that you’re really putting effort into being a great parent.  Let’s talk about another aspect of parenting: establishing a strong relationship with your child.  This is important because children who feel close to their parents are more likely to listen to them and follow their rules.
