Nigeria’s Chidinma Okafor Targets Guinness World Record With 72-Hour Crochet-a-Thon

Nigerian crochetist and social entrepreneur, Chidinma Modupe Okafor, is poised to embark on a 72-hour crochet-a-thon aimed at shattering the Guinness World Record (GWR). Crochet, a needlework craft, involves looping thread with a hooked needle to create various stitches, utilising different numbers of loops on the hook.

Scheduled from the 24th to the 27th of December, the marathon crocheting event will unfold at GOGE Africa, Lagos, commencing at 12 pm.

Inspired by the achievements of Nigerian figures like chef Hilda Baci, who set a world record for the longest cooking marathon, many Nigerian youths have recently strived to set or surpass world records across diverse spheres.

Just last month, another Nigerian, Helen Williams, established a new record for creating the longest handmade wig, spanning an incredible 351.28 metres (1,152 ft 5 in). Her tireless effort spanned over 11 days, investing over N200,000 (£2,031; $2,493) in the endeavour.

Chidinma, hailing from Imo State, spearheads the renowned crochet brand, 6chi_crocheting_brand.

According to The Nation newspaper, Chidinma’s crochet journey began at a young age as a hobby and later evolved into a strong passion for crafting diverse accessories and dresses.

Driven by her unwavering commitment, she aspires to scale the heights of her career through the crochet business.

Ahead of this record-breaking attempt, the 30-year-old artist meticulously prepared herself in three vital areas: physical endurance, mental fortitude, and a cohesive support team to ensure a seamless process.

“I’ve undergone rigorous physical endurance training to bolster stamina for continuous crochet sessions,” The Nation quoted Chidinma as saying. “Mentally, I’ve trained myself to stay focused and resilient during this crochet marathon. Additionally, with the aid of my dedicated team, we’re set to handle documentation, witness requirements, and ensure strict adherence to guidelines.”
