Novak Djokovic commences his Australian Open defense with a “pain-free” start, eyeing an unprecedented 25th major title.

Despite a wrist concern leading up to the event, the world number one is poised to face minimal challenges in the opening round against 18-year-old qualifier Dino Prizmic. Djokovic aims to extend his winning streak at the Australian Open, where he hasn’t suffered a defeat since 2018.

“I’m just hoping I can start the season in a way that I have been starting my seasons, most of my seasons, throughout my career, with a win here in Australia, in Melbourne. My favourite place, no doubt,” said the 36-year-old Serbian.

The first major test for Djokovic may arise in the third round, potentially against fellow veteran Andy Murray. Murray, a five-time Australian Open finalist, begins his campaign against Argentine 30th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

If Djokovic secures another victory, he will surpass Margaret Court’s all-time Slam record and join Court and Rafael Nadal as the only players to win 11 times at a single major. The battle for the number one ranking adds an extra layer of excitement, with Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Daniil Medvedev all vying for the top spot.

In the women’s draw, former champions Naomi Osaka and Caroline Wozniacki make their comeback to Grand Slam tennis post-pregnancy. However, top seed Iga Swiatek is the clear favourite after dominating the circuit since Ashleigh Barty’s retirement.

Swiatek, on a 16-match win streak, opens her campaign against Sofia Kenin, with aspirations for a fifth Grand Slam title. Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka and other contenders like Elena Rybakina and Naomi Osaka add to the competitive landscape, promising an exciting start to the 15-day Australian Open.
