Tragedy struck on Saturday when a motorcyclist, who was riding in a one-way direction, was hit by a truck along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, leading to the instant death of two passengers.

Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, adding that the okada rider later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital around Satellite Town, a suburb of the state,

He added that the bodies of the two deceased passengers, trapped under an empty ‘Man-Diesel’ truck, were recovered at the Barracks Bus stop along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

Taofiq revealed that the deceased were passengers on a motorcycle travelling in the prohibited ‘One-way’ direction on the expressway.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the truck driver, travelling at high speed, lost control due to a rear-busted tire and collided with the motorcycle going in the one-way direction near Barracks Bus-stop, headed towards Iyana-Iba along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

Additionally, the truck driver fled the scene after the accident, and the police from the ‘Onireke Police Division’ took away the two recovered bodies.

LASTMA Commander Area D, Lastma Ogunremi Olanrewaju, and his team promptly cleared the truck and motorcycle from the road to ensure free vehicular movement along the expressway.

In response to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Bakare-Oki Olalekan, warned truck drivers against overspeeding.

He also appealed to motorcycle operators to refrain from riding in one-way directions and restricted routes across the state.

LEADERSHIP reports that the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, recently ordered the arrest of some riders and a soldier for riding a motorcycle against traffic on the Lagos-Badagry expressway.

A disgusted Sanwo-Olu had at the time warned that driving against traffic can lead to accidents, leading to untimely death.
