Former Vice President and Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has congratulated former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd), on the occasion of his 84th birthday anniversary, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most respected elder statesmen and a symbol of patriotism, sacrifice and distinguished leadership.

Atiku also congratulated Abdulsalami on marking the milestone with the public presentation of three books produced in his honour, including his autobiography and a festschrift documenting his life and contributions to Nigeria.

According to Atiku, the publications are fitting tributes to a lifetime of service, patriotism, sacrifice and distinguished leadership.

He noted that attaining the age of 84 in good health and strength reflects divine grace and added that Abdulsalami’s contributions continue to inspire generations of Nigerians and leaders beyond the country.

Atiku recalled Abdulsalami’s historic role in returning Nigeria to democratic governance and laying the foundation for the Fourth Republic, describing the peaceful transition as one of the defining moments in Nigeria’s history.

He observed that the former Head of State’s birthday comes shortly after the 2026 Democracy Day celebration marking 27 uninterrupted years of democratic governance, noting that Abdulsalami’s leadership made a significant contribution to that legacy.

“At a critical period in our nation’s history, you placed national interest above personal ambition and guided the country through a peaceful transition that restored democratic governance,” Atiku stated.

He added that the singular act of statesmanship secured Abdulsalami’s place among the architects of modern Nigeria.

The former Vice President further praised Abdulsalami’s commitment to peace, national unity, reconciliation and democratic values, describing him as a statesman of rare wisdom, courage and moderation.

Atiku expressed confidence that the elder statesman would continue to deploy his experience and moral authority in advancing peace, national cohesion, good governance and democratic ideals in Nigeria and across Africa.

He prayed that Almighty God would continue to bless Abdulsalami with good health, renewed strength, peace of mind, divine protection and many more years of impactful service to humanity.

Atiku also extended warm congratulations and best wishes to Abdulsalami on behalf of his family and associates as he marked his 84th birthday.
