A former inmate of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Owerri, Imo State, Daniel Aturu, says his 12-year sentence proved to be life-changing despite the initial struggle.

Released on Monday after serving time for conspiracy and possession of stolen property, Aturu reflects on his journey with newfound optimism.

Though initially depressed, Aturu discovered new potential within himself. He credits the custodial centre’s support and encouragement for enabling him to excel in laundry services, catering to inmates, staff, and even the public.

He now plans to utilise his skills by engaging youths in his community who wish to learn the trade.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Aturu received a warm send-off from the centre, accompanied by a washing machine from a philanthropist to kickstart his laundry business.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Goodluck Uboegbulam, explained that Aturu’s dedication and impact led to the washing machine donation.

He noted Aturu’s 12 years of providing laundry services within the centre and to the wider community.

“Considering his positive influence and to aid his successful reintegration, the management and a kind philanthropist collaborated to present him with the washing machine,” Uboegbulam stated.

“This will help him establish himself and earn a living upon his return.”

Uboegbulam recounted Aturu’s initial despair on entering the facility but noted his quick adjustment and dedication to rehabilitation programs.

“As a Christian, Aturu actively participated in religious activities and restorative programs, seeking personal healing and seeking amends with his creator,” he explained.

“He recognized the need for self-forgiveness and inner peace, understanding the harm he caused to his victim and society.”

Furthermore, Aturu enrolled in vocational and skills acquisition programmes, choosing laundry and dry-cleaning.

He honed his skills under the guidance of the centre’s instructors, becoming proficient in fabric handling.

In his discharge remarks, Deputy Controller of Corrections Eke Eke urged Aturu to maintain his focus and positive conduct.

He assured him of the Aftercare unit’s support in facilitating his smooth reintegration and appealed to the public for acceptance and support of ex-offenders.
