The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has intensified efforts to check the circulation of counterfeit, cloned and unauthorised communication devices in Nigeria, urging manufacturers, importers, distributors and dealers to comply with its equipment Type Approval requirements.
The commission said its Device Checker Platform would strengthen regulatory oversight of SIM-enabled devices, protect consumers from non-compliant products and safeguard the integrity of telecommunications networks as the country’s digital economy continues to expand.
Speaking at a media briefing at the NCC Zonal Office in Lagos, the Zonal Controller, Mr Tunji Jimoh, said the initiative was designed to improve verification of devices and promote accountability across the communications equipment supply chain.

Jimoh said the commission had recorded progress in implementing the platform, including the streamlining of licensing and regularisation processes that enabled a significant number of device dealers in Kano State to obtain licences.
He added that the NCC had also conducted sensitisation engagements with importers and other industry stakeholders in Lagos and other parts of the country to deepen understanding of Type Approval requirements and obligations under the Device Checker framework.
According to him, the commission has developed a user-friendly application that allows authorised stakeholders to scan device International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers and upload relevant information directly to the platform, making compliance easier and more efficient.
The IMEI is a unique identification number assigned to mobile devices, which can be used to identify equipment on telecommunications networks. The NCC’s Device Checker enables consumers to verify a device’s Type Approval status before purchase, helping them make more informed decisions and avoid unauthorised products.
Jimoh said the commission had also expanded the information available to consumers and industry participants through its online resources. Consumers can use the Check Your Device portal at www.ncc.gov.ng/devicechecker to verify a device by entering its IMEI number.
Manufacturers, importers, distributors and dealers can consult the commission’s Type Approval and Device Verification Guide at www.ncc.gov.ng/DeviceCheckerGuide for details of their regulatory responsibilities, while organisations seeking equipment approval can access the application procedures through the NCC’s Type Approval webpage.
Addressing concerns about privacy, the zonal controller stressed that the platform was not designed to monitor users or access personal information stored on their phones.
“The Device Checker Platform is not a surveillance tool. It does not access personal data, messages, photographs, contacts, financial information, or any other private content stored on a device,” he said.
He explained that the platform’s function was limited to device identification and regulatory compliance verification, adding that consumers could contact the commission through its 315 toll-free consumer line for enquiries, complaints and assistance on device verification and other consumer protection issues.
The NCC urged Nigerians to verify the status of devices before purchasing them and patronise reputable, licensed dealers. It also called on industry stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the Type Approval and Device Verification Guide and ensure that their products and business operations meet the commission’s requirements.
Meanwhile, the initiative forms part of the NCC’s broader technical standards and network integrity efforts. Equipment Type Approval helps ensure that communications devices meet prescribed technical requirements before being introduced into the Nigerian market, supporting consumer protection, fair competition and the reliable operation of telecommunications networks.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening regulatory compliance, protecting subscribers and promoting a trusted communications ecosystem as mobile connectivity becomes increasingly central to business, public services and everyday economic activities.
