Ebonyi State sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr Anthony Okorie has confirmed the death of six persons in a fatal accident along the ever- busy Onueke axis of the Abakaliki/Afikpo express road.

He said the accident involved three vehicles, one is a truck, a Toyota Hiace Bus belonging to Peace Mass Transit and a commercial Mercedes truck.

He said, “The report I have is that there is an accident that occurred around Onueke which from information available is said to be a multiple accident that resulted in a total of 6 deaths.’’

He explained that four died at the first instance while another two later died at the hospital adding that those who died comprise of five adult males and one adult female.

“I cannot confirm immediately, if all of them were from the same vehicle. The dead we have taken to the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki FETHA 1.’’

Ani stated that the bodies of the deceased has been deposited at the hospital mortuary while others are currently receiving treatment at the same hospital.

The commander however did not confirm to LEADERSHIP the cause of the accident and warned drivers against overspending, reckless driving, drunk driving and others that can cause road accident.

Some of the residents who spoke to LEADERSHIP said that the accident happened at about 11am and attributed the accident to over speeding, reckless driving and called for the erection of speed breakers along the Onueke axis of the federal road.

Mr Chinedu Okafor said, “We have lost a lot if lives along this axis of the road and most times the accident is caused by over speeding especially on the part of commercial drivers and truck drivers. There is no month an accident will not occur along the axis.

“I am calling on the Ministry of Works to construct speed breakers along the axis of the road. To the best of my knowledge, that will curb the incessant fatal road accidents that occurs along the axis.
