Founder of the Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAUN), Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, has narrated how the deputy Senate president, Senator Barau Jibrin, laid the foundation for foreign universities to establish their branches in Nigeria.

Gwarzo told the first lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, during the commissioning of the Law School Building of MAUN by the first lady on Monday in Kano that when Barau chaired the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund (2015-2019), he advised him to establish a university in Nigeria.

He said it was Senator Barau who encouraged him to establish the MAUN branch in Kano State.

Gwarzo is the founder of the Maryam Abacha University of Niger Republic, which was established in 2013.

He said, ‘’ To carry the discussion forward, he invited me to the Senate. I told him the world is growing.

The way the world is changing, Nigeria cannot be left out. I told him how the law of the National Universities Commission (NUC) on the establishment of universities is hindering the establishment of foreign universities in Nigeria.

” I told him how it is done in Dubai and other places. There is the University of Wollongong and there is the University of London in Dubai, among others. This is called delocalisation.

“Mr. Barau sponsored a bill for the amendment of the law to address the issue. This is what facilitated the establishment of Skyline University Nigeria,” he said.
