Following an investigation into the matter, the Nigeria Police have absolved one of its officers, Cordelia Nwanwe, accused of involvement in N22 million extortion.
The counsel to the police officer, Mr Adebola Odunyemi, who revealed this to journalists in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, said his client, alongside two other officers were accused by Morakinyo Peter and Yusuf Dayo on July 14, 2021 of extorting bitcoin worth N22 million from them while driving on Ikoyi/Ajah Expressway in Lagos and investigations were launched into the allegations.

Odunyemi, in a statement made available to newsmen, however, said the outcome of the investigation revealed that Nwanwe had no direct involvement in the whole scenario and had since been exonerated.
The human rights lawyer’s statement was in response to a report by an online platform that Nwanwe was promoted despite being accused of extortion.
Odunyemi, who is the principal partner at the Tropicana Legal Consult said the petitions written on the alleged extortion had been withdrawn long ago and the matter resolved amicably.

The statement read, “We have the utmost responsibility to set the record straight as a minister in the temple of justice. The above subject matter was indeed reported to the force headquarters by our firm and has since been resolved.

“During the investigation, it was discovered that Madam Cordelia Nwanwe had no direct participation in the whole scenario leading to the arrest of our clients, and a letter of withdrawal was issued from our firm to the force headquarters.

“We urge the general public to disregard whatever publication indicting the officers as we were not contacted by anybody to get the true picture of what transpired before such malicious report was posted.’’
