The Abia State government has approved the payment of over N62 million bursary award to its law school students across the country.

The commissioner for information and culture, Okey Kanu stated this at a press briefing on the outcome of this week’s executive council meeting in Umuahia, the state capital.

Kanu, who said the meeting was chaired by the governor, Alex Otti, added that the gesture is in keeping with the high premium the administration places on education.

“This will bring a lot of joy to our people, the students and of course the students’ parents and guardians,” said Kanu, who was accompanied by two other sides of the governor.

He said the administration has penciled down 170 primary schools at 10 per local government for retrofitting in addition to the two model ones undergoing construction in each senatorial district.

“In addition, 51 secondary schools have been approved for renovation at three per local government and the schools will have something that will make them a model.”

According to him, “The schools will have staff, teachers, and headteacher’s quarters as well as caretaker and gate house. For the primaries, there will be nurseries too.”

“You will recall that at the onset, the governor, Alex Otti had declared a state of emergency in education. So, it is in keeping with that, that the approvals were made.”

Contributing, his counterpart of the ministry of education, Uche Eme-Uche, said the award is in response to a plea by the students following the hike in their school fees and other charges.

She explained that the number of the students could not be ascertained now “as the administration has written the schools to avail us of the number of our students there.”
