The IKE Foundation for Autism has urged the federal government to establish special intervention funds for the autism community to address the unique needs and challenges faced by individuals on the autism spectrum.
At a press conference in Abuja yesterday, the executive director of the foundation, Mr Francis Mohie, stated that these funds could be utilized for various purposes, including funding for early screening and diagnosis to ensure timely access to intervention services.
“Support for early intervention therapies, such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and behavioral interventions.
“Resources for specialized education programmes tailored to the needs of autistic students.
“Training for teachers and educational staff to implement evidence-based practices for supporting autistic learners.
“Funding for medical and mental health services specific to autism, including diagnostic assessments, counseling, and psychiatric care.
“Support for access to adaptive equipment and assistive technologies,” he said.
Speaking on the implementation of policies within the autism community, he urged the government to prioritize guaranteeing access to education, healthcare, and support services for individuals on the autism spectrum.
He emphasised that the government should enforce anti-discrimination laws to protect the rights of autistic individuals in employment, education, and other areas.
