Former 400m African record holder and Olympic medalist, Falilat Ogunkoya-Osheku, urged President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government to honour Team Nigeria’s women 4x100m relay team that did the country proud by winning elusive 4x100m relay gold with an African record at the just Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The quartet of world record holder Tobi Amusan, Favour Ofili, Grace Nwokocha and Rosemary Chukwuma ran a new African record of 42.10 second, which erased the one month old 42.22 seconds African record they set in Oregon, USA at the World Athletics championships, to win the elusive gold medal for Team Nigeria on Sunday at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.

Excited with the team’s impressive performance, Ogunkoya, who was the Nigerian athlete to win an individual track and field medal at the Olympic games, said the team ran well and made Nigerians proud.

“The Nigerian women’s 4×100 relay team ran very well and I want the President to honour them, They made Nigerians proud and made themselves proud too, congratulation to them,” Ogunkoya said in her voice message to LEADERSHIP Sports.
The former All African Games’ 400m gold medalist, also wants the President to honour Tobi Amusan for her World Record performance at the World Championships in Oregon, USA.
Nigeria’s superstar athlete set a new World Record twice before she was crowned the world champion in the 100m hurdles at the global showpiece event in Oregon. She is the first Nigerian athlete to achieve the feat.
“The President should honour Tobi for her World Record performance. She made Nigeria proud,” Ogunkoya said.
