Ballon d’Or 2026: Ronaldo, Salah, Osimhen, Raphinha Snubs Spark Fan Fury

The announcement of the 30-man shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d’Or has triggered fierce debate among football supporters, with the omissions of Cristiano Ronaldo, Mohamed Salah, Victor Osimhen and Barcelona winger Raphinha emerging as the biggest talking points.

Across social media platforms, fans have questioned the criteria used by France Football to select the nominees, with many describing the shortlist as controversial and accusing the organisers of applying inconsistent standards.

The biggest argument centres on the continued rivalry between Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, with supporters of the Portuguese superstar particularly unhappy that the Al-Nassr forward was left out while Messi, now 39, earned another nomination.

Ronaldo’s supporters have argued that his contribution to Al-Nassr’s Saudi Pro League title-winning campaign should have been enough to earn him a place among the nominees. They believe his individual performances and goalscoring output were overlooked in determining the final list.

The inclusion of Messi has intensified the argument, with some Ronaldo supporters questioning why the Argentine remains eligible for another nomination while their favourite was excluded.

The debate has quickly developed into another chapter of the long-running Ronaldo-Messi rivalry, with supporters on both sides defending their respective idols.

For Ronaldo’s camp, the issue is less about Messi’s achievements and more about what they see as a lack of consistency in the voting process.

The reaction has been equally strong in Barcelona circles following Raphinha’s omission.

The Brazilian winger is regarded by many supporters as one of the biggest casualties of the shortlist after playing a key role in Barcelona’s campaign. Having finished fifth in the 2025 Ballon d’Or rankings, his complete absence from the 2026 nominees has left fans stunned.

Barcelona supporters have taken to social media to describe the decision as an “absolute robbery”, arguing that Raphinha’s individual contribution deserved recognition.

His omission has also raised questions about how much weight is given to a player’s overall influence on his club’s season compared with other factors considered by the voters.

Raphinha’s absence is particularly surprising to his supporters because of the high expectations surrounding him after his strong showing in last year’s Ballon d’Or race.

While the debate has been dominated by Ronaldo and Raphinha, Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah is another major name missing from the list.

The Egyptian has enjoyed another influential period at club level, but his omission has angered Liverpool supporters and sections of the Premier League fanbase.

Salah’s exclusion has been accompanied by the absence of other prominent Premier League names, including Chelsea star Cole Palmer and Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka.

Their omissions have prompted accusations of continental bias, particularly because Paris Saint-Germain reportedly have 10 players on the 30-man shortlist.

Some fans have questioned whether the dominance of PSG players reflects the weight being placed on their European success, while others argue that the number of nominees from the French champions is simply a reflection of their outstanding campaign.

The controversy has not, however, completely overshadowed the players who did make the cut.

Harry Kane is among the leading names attracting widespread respect after an extraordinary goalscoring campaign. The England captain’s reported 73-goal season has placed him firmly among the leading contenders for the prestigious individual prize.

Kylian Mbappé is also expected to be heavily involved in the conversation, while teenage sensation Lamine Yamal continues to strengthen his reputation as one of world football’s brightest young stars.

Their inclusion has been largely welcomed, although the enthusiasm has done little to calm the arguments surrounding the players who were left out.

For many supporters, the 2026 shortlist has become less about who could win the Ballon d’Or and more about who should have been nominated in the first place.

The contrasting reactions have once again exposed the difficulty of satisfying football fans when selecting candidates for the sport’s most prestigious individual award.

Every year, the Ballon d’Or shortlist generates disagreement, but this year’s nominations appear to have produced an especially fierce response. The combination of established superstars, emerging talents and several high-profile omissions has created a highly polarised debate.

Ronaldo’s absence has provided fuel for his supporters, while Messi’s inclusion has reopened old arguments between rival fanbases. Raphinha’s omission has angered Barcelona supporters, and Salah’s absence has left Premier League fans questioning the recognition given to players outside Europe’s most successful clubs.
