Amidst the rapid pace of technological evolution, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) forward-thinking fiber optic initiative emerges as a beacon of progress, poised to elevate connectivity infrastructure at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and propel the institution into the digital future.
Fibre optics, or optical fibre, refers to the technology that transmits information as light pulses along a glass or plastic fibre.
It will be recalled that the Vice Chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Olufemi Peters, during a pre-convocation news conference in Abuja, ahead of its 13th convocation slated for April 13, disclosed that TETFund is set upgrade NOUN study centres with high-speed fibre optics.
TETFund’s fiber optic initiative aligns perfectly with the university’s commitment to flexible learning.
With faster and more reliable internet connectivity, students will seamlessly engage in online discussions, access multimedia resources, and participate in collaborative projects from anywhere in the country.
This will not only enhance the learning experience but also fosters a sense of community among remote learners, bridging geographical barriers and fostering a more inclusive educational environment.
This is happening at a time experts are urging TETfund to extend its interventions to intangible needs of universities such as Optic Fibre for provision of the internet that will develop the university system.
The then Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Akure, (FUTA), Prof. Adebiyi Daramola, had said the fund should take its interventions beyond infrastructure that have direct bearing on teaching and learning to at least the above listed infrastructure.
“We are saying that those infrastructures are very important, we don’t even have enough of them; but at the same time some critical infrastructures are needed to boost those on the ground.
”You and I would agree that you need power to run any decent university. You need investment in water provision for the environment to be decent enough.
“You need fiber optic for internet access; and of course you need good roads,” he was quoted saying.
However, Peters who disclosed this information said the rate of technological advancement at NOUN attracted the offer from TETFund.
“Right now, our academics all over the faculties and departments have video components to assist our students and we deploy this with ease.
“And because of the manner we deploy technology, TETFund has offered to assist us with fibre optics in all our study centres across the country.
“It is a testimony to where we are in terms of technology,” he said.
He said that a lot of Nigerians were yet to understand how the university operates in spite of its years of existence in the country.
Mr Peters noted that the institution had brought development to many towns and villages where the university had its study centres.
“The forthcoming convocation would be an opportunity to showcase what the institution can do with technology,” he said.
LEADERSHIP report that the speed of fiber optics allows for new ways of learning, enabling web-based testing, digital classrooms, and online blackboards while students have access to a broad scope of information, far beyond what can fit in a textbook.
Also, teachers will benefit from fiber optic cables just as much as students. Because of the high-speed capabilities of fiber optics, educators can incorporate web-based videos and other materials into their lessons while computerized testing also speeds up grading processes, freeing teachers to focus on lesson planning and other priorities.
