It therefore warned the government not to allow another strike in the university system due to unmet demands.

The warning was from  Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) chapter of the union in Bauchi, yesterday.

In an interaction with journalists during a protest in Bauchi, ASUU vice chairperson in ATBU, Mohammed Mohammed, noted with concern that the federal government and the union have been in negotiations for almost 15 years with no solution in sight.

He said the union’s demands for the federal government to adhere to include payment of its members’ earned academic allowances.

Other demands the union enumerated, include the release of members’ withheld salaries and the payment of their promotion arrears.

The union, according to the chairperson, has also rejected in totality the implementation of IPPIS in the varsity system.

ASUU also warned the federal government against the establishment of more universities, but rather to adequately fund the existing ones, saying “We are tired of governments’ deception.”

“We call on the government to revert the illegal dissolution of public universities’ governing councils,” Mohammed said.

The national auditor of ASUU, Prof Adamu Mohammed Babayo, said several universities in the country are being run illegally.

He added that other universities lack recognition since 2021 due to the absence of Governing Councils and other various issues.
