An economic expert and trade unionist, Mr Samson Olutayo Olorunda has emphasised the need for trade unions to engage in pragmatic, constructive dialogue rather than resorting to confrontational and destructive measures.

Olutayo, in a chat with LEADERSHIP at Ikinyinwa-Ijesa in Obokun local government area of Osun State yesterday, noted that the ongoing trade dispute between labour and the federal government over wage increases could have been resolved without dispute.

The trade union activist who used aggressive, destructive tactics as a means to an end recounted his days as a frontline electricity worker and his experience with police at Alagbon in past struggles.

Olorunda stated that during agitation, while standing firm in advocating for better pay and working conditions, they also recognised the importance of preserving public assets and maintaining order.

“In my tenure as a worker in the public electricity sector, our approach to unionism emphasised dialogue and constructive engagement. While we stood firm in advocating for better pay and working conditions, we also recognised the importance of preserving public assets and maintaining order.

Reacting to the recent confrontation between labour and the government, the activist maintained that, at the end of the day, the issues were still referred to round-table talks for resolution through dialogue but lamented the effect the strike might have caused individuals and the nation as a whole.

“The public, a well-informed segment of society, voiced their disapproval, urging unions to reconsider their stance. In hindsight, it is clear that the voice of reason prevailed. The swift reversal of the strike and suspension of destructive actions demonstrated responsiveness to public sentiment. This shift not only prevented further harm to the economy but also preserved the reputation of the labour movement.

“In conclusion, the lessons learned from past actions underscore the importance of thoughtful deliberation and strategic planning in union advocacy,” Olorunda posited.
