The FCT minister of state, Dr Maryam Mahmoud, who gave the commendation during the association’s annual National Conference and 50th Anniversary celebration in Abuja, praised them for always promoting basic practices and enhancing the overall quality of education in this vital area.

Mahmoud, who was represented by the director of the Department of Quality Assurance, Dr Emmanuel Shuaibu, also congratulated the association for being at the forefront of nurturing and empowering educators.

Earlier, the FCTA’s education secretary, Dr Danlami Hayyo, said that the critical role the subject plays in shaping the fabric of society goes beyond the management of the household but about equipping individuals, especially young people, with essential skills needed to have a healthy, productive and balanced life.

Hayyo, who was represented by FCTA Department of Quality Assurance deputy director Malam Rilwan Mudi, said the subject has remained relevant, dynamic and responsive to the changing needs of society.
He commended the association’s leadership in FCT for being a beacon of excellence and advocating for the promotion of home economics at all levels of education.

The education secretary urged the association to keep preparing students to navigate this era of technological advancement, globalisation and complex social challenges by equipping them with the knowledge and competencies needed to thrive in a modern and interconnected world.

He assured the association of the FCT education secretariat’s commitment to supporting home economics education, recognising the value of the subject and its impact on families and society.

While delivering her address, the HETAN’s FCT chapter president, Mrs Rifkatu Lami Yisa, advocated for sustained inclusion of home economics as a mandatory subject for nationwide educational entrance.

She explained that the subject is a foundational discipline that prepares students to effectively manage their personal and family lives, contributing to the country’s socio-economic development.

Yisa, who said that Home Economics fosters entrepreneurship, urged the education authorities to recognise the importance of sustaining it within the curriculum as a prerequisite for educational advancement.

The FCT chapter president also assured that the association remains committed to advocating for policies that support the growth and development of Home Economics education in Nigeria.

She expressed the association’s appreciation to the FCT Education Secretariat for their efforts to ensure the subject remains relevant.
