Emirates Recycles, Reuses 88,000kg Of Plastic From Inflight Dining

As part of activities marking World Environment Day 2026, Emirates has announced that it recycled and repurposed more than 88,000 kilograms of plastic waste from its Economy Class inflight dining operations over the past year.
The airline said the initiative forms part of its closed-loop recycling programme launched in June 2023, aimed at reducing waste and promoting circular economy practices across its operations.

According to Emirates, damaged and unserviceable Economy Class meal service items, including trays, casseroles, snack dishes and bowls, are collected after flights and processed at a specialised recycling facility in Dubai. The recovered plastic is then transformed into new inflight service products containing up to 25 per cent recycled material before being returned for use on board.

The airline disclosed that it has invested more than AED50 million in transitioning to a closed-loop manufacturing model for its inflight dining serviceware.

With millions of meal service items used annually across its global network, Emirates said the programme has helped reduce plastic waste sent to landfills while also lowering transportation-related emissions through local recycling and manufacturing.

The initiative is being implemented in partnership with deSter FZE UAE, a leading aviation serviceware provider specialising in closed-loop manufacturing. The company is a member of the CE100 network of circular economy organisations and holds a Gold Sustainability Rating from Ecovadis for its environmental practices.

Beyond inflight dining, Emirates highlighted several sustainability measures introduced across its passenger experience.

The airline noted that its latest children’s toy and bag collections contain at least 50 per cent recycled materials, while unnecessary plastic wrapping has been eliminated from children’s bags and blankets. First Class bedding packaging has also been redesigned, replacing plastic wrapping with reusable bags made from recycled polyester.

Similarly, headset packaging across multiple cabin classes now uses 100 per cent recycled low-density polyethylene, while amenity kits in First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy cabins increasingly incorporate recycled and bio-based materials.

Emirates also disclosed that its Premium Economy and Economy Class fleece blankets are manufactured from recycled polyester, with each blanket containing material equivalent to approximately 28 recycled plastic bottles.

The airline said it has phased out plastic straws across its onboard services, replacing them with certified paper alternatives. Plastic carrier bags used for duty-free purchases have also been replaced with paper bags as part of efforts to reduce single-use plastics.

In addition, Emirates continues to support onboard recycling through the segregation of glass and plastic bottles on selected flights arriving in Dubai, enabling more efficient recycling through local waste management partners.

To further raise environmental awareness among passengers, Emirates’ inflight entertainment system, Ice, will feature 100 episodes from the David Attenborough Collection throughout June and July, celebrating the renowned natural historian’s contributions to environmental education and conservation.

The airline said the various initiatives underscore its commitment to reducing environmental impact while embedding sustainability across its operations and customer experience.
