The Katsina State government has announced a significant investment of N22 billion in a water infrastructure project aimed at ensuring sustainable water supply across the state.

According to the managing director of the Katsina Water Board, TukurHassan, the project is expected to address the challenges of water scarcity and poor sanitation in the state.

“We have two major challenges which we are trying to overcome now. These challenges are understanding the programme at the beginning, and we are almost done with that issue. And then the community ownership of the programme. In other words, the sustainability of the project constructed in a community is sustained by the community,” he explained.

The project coordinator, Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene Programme (SURWASH), Aminu Dayabu, added that the agency will receive N17 billion from the allocated funds earmarked by the state government.

He highlighted the project’s significant impact on people’s lives, citing the strategic plans and guidelines the government provided for delivering the project across the state.

In a related development, the wife of the state governor, Zulaihat DikkoRadda, who has been appointed as the SURWASH Ambassador thanked the organisers for the appointment and assured that she would use her new position to mobilise and sensitise people on healthy hygiene practices to achieve the core mandate of the project.

The SURWASH project is a collaboration between the state government and the World Bank to make water accessible to the people of the state.
