A chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) and 2019 governorship aspirant, Muhammad Abba Liman, has commiserated with the victims, people and government of Borno State on the recent flood disaster in Maiduguri, the state capital.

The flood killed dozens of people and displaced tens of thousands of others.

The politician and businessman who spoke with newsmen in Maiduguri described the impacts of the flood as “overwhelming, heartbreaking and unimaginably painful.”

Liman said, “It is heartbreaking and a terrible experience to see buildings and business premises being submerged; people, including women and children, helplessly drown in the deluge of water that overran half of Maiduguri town.

“For a state and city that have been at the receiving end of more than a decade North East protracted conflicts orchestrated by Boko Haram insurgency, a natural disaster of this magnitude is least expected.

“The impacts of this flood disaster on economic, social lives and infrastructural facilities in the state are a huge setback for the people and government of Borno,” he lamented.

The victims of the flood disaster, he said, would continue to need the support and prayers of good-spirited Nigerians and the world at large to relieve them of the immediate and long-term impacts of the disaster.

Liman expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his prompt visit to Maiduguri, interventions of state governors, agencies of federal and state governments for their proactive interventions in rescue operations, provision and distribution of relief materials to the victims.

He also lauded the efforts of Southern Borno elders led by the deputy governor, Umar Usman Kadafur, Senator Ali Ndume (APC, Southern Borno Senatorial District) and Hon. Muktar Aliyu Betara, who presented N200 million to Governor Babagana Zulum as humanitarian contribution towards providing succour to victims of the flood disaster.

The party chieftain however called on “all well-meaning Nigerians, especially philanthropists and corporate bodies to come to the aid of the victims of Maiduguri flood disaster with a view to supporting them materially, medically and psychologically.”
