NANS Frowns At Arbitrary Increase In School Fees

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone A, has expressed deep concern over the arbitrary increase in school fees across higher institutions in the country.

This is even as the student body commended the federal government over the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) also known as student loan.

This formed part of the communique issued at the end of the 38th elective congress of the association, held at the Kaduna State University (KASU) . It was jointly signed by Dominic Philip (Chairman of the Communiqué drafting committee), Comr. Umar Suleiman Doko (Convention Chairman), and Amb. Ahmed Bashir Magaji (Secretary of the Communiqué Drafting Committee) and made available to newsmen in Kaduna.

NANS also urged the federal government to expedite the process of opening more CNG conversion service stations while calling on the government to hasten the provision of CNG buses to tertiary institutions as a way of ameliorating the transportation challenges.

On arbitrary increase in school fees, the association expressed deep concern over the abrupt and exponential increase in school fees across tertiary institutions in the country under the new academic calendar. It said this worrisome development requires urgent attention from all well-meaning Nigerians and stakeholders in the education sector.

‘While commending the federal government on the establishment of the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) popularly known as students loan, Congress highlighted the widespread need for accessible funding. It cautioned against institutions using rising utility and service costs as a pretext for increasing fees.

On the state of the nation, “The Congress deliberated and called on the federal government to expedite the process of opening more CNG conversion service stations. Congress further call on the FG to make available and hasten the provision of CNG buses to tertiary institutions, to ease transportation challenges faced by students.”

The Congress commended the Kaduna State Government for its support and hospitality during the event and pledged continued support to the government led by Senator Uba Sani. It’s appreciation was also extended to the security agencies for ensuring a safe environment before, during, and after the Congress.

Furthermore, the Congress admonished students to prioritise dialogue through constitutional means amidst economic hardships, discouraging involvement in destructive activities.
