Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, tasked the newly inducted Tuberculosis ambassadors with going after the unaccounted 15000 residents of Lagos living with tuberculosis.
Abayomi stated this at the investiture of 57 women who are local council chairmen and wives of council chairmen as Stop TB Ambassadors by the wife of Lagos State Governor, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, disclosed that parties remain the most familiar place to get infected with tuberculosis.
He said that it is essential that the newly inducted ambassadors should go after the unaccounted TB sufferers because TB is an infectious disease that can be quickly passed.
He added that everyone with TB not treated is infecting 10 to 15 more every year, noting that for years, the state has been identifying people and treating residents with tuberculosis.
Abayomi stated that the state would have had a tuberculosis epidemic without the state government’s efforts.
The commissioner further said parties are among the most familiar and fastest places to become infected with TB.
In her address, the wife of Lagos State Governor Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu said she is optimistic that the new state ambassadors are set to kick out TB of Lagos.
She tasked the new ambassadors to take urgent steps in the next 48 hours to quickly change the narrative in the fight against TB in Lagos State.
Mrs Sanwo-Olu enjoined the new ambassadors to get philanthropists to support the project, imploring them to take the campaign to schools, garages and markets.
“We need to actively take part in this campaign. The work is a collective effort and togetherness; we can do it.”
All the newly inducted ambassadors pledged to drive TB awareness in their communities aside, driving increased budgetary provision for the fight against tuberculosis in the state.
