During a plenary session on Tuesday, Senator Kawu Sumaila from Kano South accused his fellow lawmakers of permitting the use of hard drugs in places under their control, such as their homes and offices.

While contributing to the debate on a Bill aimed at establishing the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation, Senator Sumaila expressed concern over the prevalence of drug abuse among political leaders.

“As I speak now, many of our constituency offices and political offices are filled with drugs and drug dealers can be found in our homes and offices,” he stated.

A member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Sumaila went on to reveal that he is aware of senior politicians who actively support drug dealers in their illegal activities. “I can point out political leaders who are, in various ways, contributing to or endorsing drug abuse in Nigeria. Therefore, Mr. President, we need to take this issue seriously,” he emphasised.

He further suggested that some lawmakers themselves may be involved in drug use. “If we are discussing this, we must recognise that we are all together. We must confront the issue from within. Let’s take a stand and test ourselves to see who is involved and who is not,” he urged.
