Peter Obi’s Election Rigging Warning Sparks Mixed Reactions Among Nigerians

Nigerians have reacted to Peter Obi’s warning, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), that he would ensure those who rig elections face the consequences, with some backing his stance. In contrast, others caution against statements that could be misinterpreted.

Obi sparked the reactions on Wednesday during an NDC town hall meeting in Nasarawa State, where he vowed to tackle electoral malpractice ahead of the 2027 general election.

“You didn’t ask about what we are going to do if people rig the election next year. Let me assure you, number one, this coming election, we will rig those who rig it,” the former Anambra State governor said.

He added that if elected president, his administration would strengthen political parties and the electoral process to prevent election rigging.

“And let me assure you, number two, if I’m elected the President of Nigeria, nobody will rig elections in this country again because the first thing we need to do is to strengthen our parties, strengthen the process,” he said.

The remarks triggered reactions on X, particularly among supporters who interpreted the statement as a warning to those contemplating electoral fraud ahead of the 2027 general elections.

An X user, @Mrokoye_Nnamdi, appeared to echo Obi’s choice of words, writing: “If they Rig it, we will RIG the person, make e check if Rigging Dey sweet.”

Another user, @ReqlDIgili, said voters should focus on protecting their votes by ensuring polling units are properly monitored throughout the collation process.

“Obi’s message to election riggers is clear. Ours is to turn up, vote, and make sure every polling unit has an agent who stays until the result sheet is signed and announced,” the user wrote.

Similarly, @Jasper_Egede endorsed the prospect of criminal sanctions against electoral offenders, saying: “Anyone who attempts to rig this election will do jail time. Any of them.”

Another supporter, @PUgochuckwu42253, expressed frustration over the possibility of electoral manipulation, linking it to concerns about Nigeria’s political direction.

“I agree with this statement! Imagine suffering to go to school, and an idiot dumb head becomes president and takes the country off the path of progress! Enough is enough!!!” the user wrote.

However, as of the time of filing this report, the presidency and other political opponents had yet to react to the statement.

Obi’s comments came amid renewed warnings from electoral authorities that those who compromise the integrity of the 2027 elections could face disciplinary and legal consequences.

On October 8, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, warned that electoral officials found engaging in partisan activities, administrative carelessness or other ethical violations would face dismissal and prosecution.

Amupitan made the declaration while delivering the keynote address at the 10th Annual Conference of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) in Lagos.

Similarly, on October 21, INEC warned politicians, party agents and its own officials against tampering with votes during the 2027 general elections, cautioning that offenders risk imprisonment and fines.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Plateau State, Prof. Samuel Egwu, gave the warning in Jos during a stakeholders’ meeting with political party leaders and candidates.

Egwu described the engagement as crucial to preparations for the elections, stressing that political parties and candidates had significant roles to play in ensuring a credible process.

“This is the most important meeting I will be having with stakeholders, the parties and their candidates. You are the key game-changers in the ongoing campaigns, and in the elections we are going to conduct in two phases: the Presidential and National Assembly elections on the 16th of January, and the Governorship and State Assembly elections in February,” he said.

He explained that the meeting was intended to provide stakeholders with essential electoral information and remind them of their responsibilities under the law.

Meanwhile, LEADERSHIP spoke to other Nigerians to get their take on the comments and ask how prepared they are to protect their votes as the 2027 election is around the corner.

Babatunde Ismail Babajide, a cybersecurity expert who spoke with LEADERSHIP, said he did not support the statement, arguing that it could be misinterpreted.

“No, I don’t support what he said. I am ready to protect my vote as long as my life is not at risk,” he said.

His position highlights a concern about how forceful political rhetoric may be understood in an already tense electoral environment, particularly when voters are determined to defend their ballots but remain concerned about their personal safety.

Blessing John, an entrepreneur, said she supported Obi’s position, citing concerns about the credibility of past elections and the need for a free and fair process in 2027.

“Yes, I support the statement 100 per cent. We all know the 2023 election was rigged, and come the 2027 election, we would not fold our arms and watch them rig it again. So yes, I support Mr Peter Obi; it’s high time we have a free and fair election in Nigeria,” she said.

She, however, clarified that her support for protecting votes should not be interpreted as an endorsement of violence.

“Honestly, I’m not in support of violence, and for everything, make sure to stay alive, but I will do anything to protect my vote and make it count,” Blessing added.

Haneefah Abdulrahman, chief executive officer of FitzNArtz, a creative media and fitness agency, also expressed support for Obi’s remarks.

“I 100% support what he said. Those who rig will be rigged because why would you decide to take away people’s rights?” she said.

However, Haneefah disclosed that she would not participate in the election herself, while urging those who intend to vote to make independent choices.

“Honestly, I won’t be voting. But I’d advise those who will be out to vote to vote without being manipulated into choosing one who isn’t their choice,” she added.

Hadiza Musa, a businesswoman based in Kano, also backed Obi’s position, arguing that electoral fraud undermines voters’ confidence in the democratic process.

“I actually support Peter Obi on this. I believe that rigging shouldn’t be an option in an electoral system because it is annoying when people vote, only for the election to be rigged at the end and not represent what people voted for. This is one of the reasons that created voter apathy, and we are seeing the harm it’s doing,”  Hadiza said.

She said she was prepared to participate in the election and monitor the process to ensure her vote counted.

“I am ready to protect my vote by making sure I first of all participate in the election. I will cast my vote for my preferred candidate and sit down and observe, guard the ballot and report anything I see [that is] an element of electoral fraud. It’s worth sacrificing a day to ensure that the election is not rigged,” she said.

She also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure transparency and prevent electoral malpractice.

“I will also use this opportunity to appeal to INEC to be transparent and ensure any electoral fraud is avoided,” she added.

Also speaking with LEADERSHIP  was Samuel, an ICT officer and cybersecurity enthusiast. Samuel disagreed with Obi’s position, arguing that electoral malpractice was systemic and could not be addressed by an individual alone.

“No, because election rigging is systemic; it is built directly into the legal framework that establishes Nigeria’s electoral processes. No single individual can rig an election on their own, they would essentially have to rig the entire country,” he said.

However,  he said he was fully prepared to protect his vote, describing it as a fundamental democratic right.

“I am fully prepared to protect my vote. It represents my franchise and my fundamental right to a free and fair election, and I am committed to ensuring that my vote is safe and counted,” he added.

Umar, a civil servant, expressed support for prosecuting electoral offenders, indicating his readiness to participate in efforts to protect the integrity of the electoral process.

Similarly, Suleiman Abiola Babatunde, a project manager, said he did not support Obi’s statement but expressed complete readiness to protect his vote.

“100% ready,” he said when asked about his preparedness to defend his vote during the election.
