Super Eagles star striker, Victor Osimhen, has set his sights on the prestigious FIFA Puskas Award after his stunning overhead kick helped Galatasaray beat Antalyaspor 3-0 on Saturday in the Turkish Super League.
The Nigerian international came on for the last 10 minutes after an injury layoff to score a brilliant goal, his third since joining the Turkish side.
His overhead strike has also generated conversation as a Puskás Award nomination for the most beautiful goal of the year, in honor of legendary Real Madrid striker Ferenc Puskás.
Asked whether his goal deserved a Puskás nomination, the reigning African Men’s Player of the Year couldn’t hide his feelings.
“Of course it could be. It was an incredible goal. It’s a classy goal, why not, it could be,” he told the club’s official website.
While reflecting on the match, the 25-year-old acknowledged that the team struggled in the first half but eventually found their rhythm, largely thanks to Mauro Icardi’s decisive contributions.
Despite the earlier frustration of having his first goal ruled out, Osimhen maintained that the most important aspect of the day was the team’s ability to secure three points and move forward in their campaign.
“When we looked at the first half, we were not that good; we took the lead thanks to Mauro’s goals, and we were able to play much better in the second half. We had a 4-day holiday, and as a result we rested well; now we will continue the same way,” Osimhen said.
