Speaking at the closing ceremony of the  broad-based national stakeholders’ consultation, validation workshop and development of national blue economy strategy for the Federal Republic Of Nigeria In Abuja, the head of division, Blue economy, Africa Union, Georges Asseko said , “Nigeria, with its vast coastline, rich marine resources, and strategic location, is well-positioned to be a leader in Africa’s blue economy. This has been proven by the fast development of aquaculture value chains that make the country the second producer of aquaculture products per year.

“The AU commission also recognises the leadership of Nigeria by setting a stand alone and dedicated Ministry in charge of Blue Economy aligned to the immense potential as stipulated in the Africa Blue Economy Strategy (ABES) as a blueprint and a catalyst for growth and sustainable development. The Africa Union Agenda 2063, envisions an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its resources and positioned as a dynamic force on the global arena. To this extend, the blue economy is integral to fostering inclusive economic growth, ensuring food security, creating jobs and wealth, protecting ecosystems, and promoting regional integration.”

He further called on all  marine stakeholders in Nigeria to work together to achieve the potential of a blue economy in Nigeria.

He said, “As this strategy moves from validation to implementation, there is a need for all stakeholders in Nigeria, namely government agencies, private sector actors, civil society organisations, academic experts, and local communities, to actively contribute to the success of this strategy.

“The validation workshop is an important step towards realising a vision of economic resilience, environmental stewardship, and social equity.

Nigeria’s successful implementation of this strategy will not only contribute to the well-being of its citizens, but it will also provide a model for other African nations.”

Also speaking at the event, the minister of blue economy, Adegboyega Oyetola said the development of our National Blue Economy Strategy is a significant step towards enhancing our nation’s economic growth while ensuring the protection of our marine and coastal ecosystems.

According to him , “Throughout the discussions, we have explored innovative strategies, identified key challenges, and shared best practices in harnessing the potential of our marine and coastal resources. This clearly demonstrates that our vision for a sustainable blue economy must be anchored in collaboration, inclusivity, and a shared commitment to sustainability.

“The development of our National Blue Economy Strategy is a significant step towards enhancing our nation’s economic growth while ensuring the protection of our marine and coastal ecosystems. This strategy provides a roadmap for the sustainable harnessing of the potential of all aspects of the blue economy.

“Let us also remember that unlocking the full potential of all sub-sectors of the blue economy requires a strategic, sustainable approach, built on research, collaboration, and public-private partnerships, including partnerships with organisations such as AU-IBAR, among others.”
