In his relatively short time in office, just over a year and a half, Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia is showing a sound redefinition of what it means to prioritize good governance, including the welfare of the labour force.

Historically, many governors had faced pressures that often led them to sideline the very tenets of governance.

However, Governor Alia clearly stands out as a beacon of change. He has resolutely committed himself to the welfare of the people, signaling a new era for governance in Benue State.

This dedication is noticeable in his inventiveness aimed at uplifting the workers, and the senior citizens who had long been overlooked.

One of the governor’s most noteworthy actions, has been the timely payment of salaries. Workers in Benue State now receive their monthly welfare packages before the 25th of each month, a significant upgrade that establishes financial stability for many families.

Furthermore, pensioners are no longer neglected; they receive their full retirement benefits within three months of leaving active service. This remarkable turnaround is not just unrivalled, it is life changing. Many citizens are expressing their disbelief at such rapid progress, a sentiment that speaks to the recent past locust era they had faced.

Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently signed into law a minimum wage of Seventy thousand naira only for federal government workers.

Meanwhile, taking a cue, Governor Hyacinth Alia added to his wave of unprecedented progress by announcing a minimum wage of 75,000 Naira for Benue workers.

This is a move that those who know his dedication to the welfare of the people have eagerly anticipated.

This pronouncement, set to take effect in November 2024, is not just a number; it portrays total respect for labour and acknowledgement of the hard work that impacts our economy positively.

Moreover, the governor has also shown great commitment towards addressing the nagging issue of unpaid salaries. He plans to stagger the payment of the remaining three months of the five-month captured in the 2024 budget as part of the salary arrears he inherited, a move that further clearly demonstrates his understanding of the financial challenges workers face.

By restoring the hitherto deprived dignity of the workers and pensioners in the Food Basket State, Governor Alia is sending a strong message: workers deserve fair reward for their efforts.

In conclusion, Governor Hyacinth Alia is not just changing the narrative of governance in Benue State; he is rewriting it. His focus on the welfare of workers and retirees reflects a profound adherence to the people he serves.

As we pay attention to the future, it is clear that with sustained devotion, Benue State may well become a model for how effective governance can elevate and empower a society.
