Commissioner for education in Cross River State, Senator Stephen Odey, has assured residents of Governor Bassey Otu’s willingness to revitalise the education sector for the good of the state.

Odey gave the assurance while receiving a delegation from the Idomi community, Yakurr local government area of the state, in his office yesterday.

He promised to resolve the problem of a dearth of teachers, assuring them of the government’s intention to engage new hands to boost the staff strength of the school so that the school can compete adequately with its contemporary in the state.

Other areas of concern that the education commissioner pledged to address include fixing other infrastructural facilities like staff rooms and other facilities that will bring improvement to the learning environment.

The çommissioner urged host communities to take ownership and protect government facilities within their localities as if the property were theirs.

Earlier, the delegation led by Nelson Eteng, a former member of the Cross River State House of Assembly, lauded the Commissioner for his timely intervention in Community Secondary School Idomi, where he oversaw construction during his time as Executive Chairman of the Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

The delegation enumerated pressing issues to draw the commissioner’s attention, including inadequate teachers, renovation needs for dilapidated buildings, PTA levy issues, poor management by some principals, and security shortages.

“Lack of security has resulted in criminal break-ins and theft,” Ofem maintained.
