Sowore Granted Bail, Vows To Stay In Detention Over ‘Unjust Conditions’

Former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, has been granted bail following his engagement with the Force Intelligence Department (FID) of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in Abuja on Monday.

However, Sowore vowed to reject any bail conditions that he believed could undermine his innocence, dignity, or integrity.

LEADERSHIP reports that Sowore was invited by the police to respond to several allegations, including resisting and obstructing public officers, disobedience to lawful orders, cyberstalking, and acts allegedly intended to prevent arrests.

Despite the allegations, Sowore maintained that his ordeal was politically motivated. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), he alleged that the authorities were targeting him due to his public criticism of Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun’s tenure extension.

He further claimed that the police intended to detain him and transfer him to Lagos for what he described as a “kangaroo trial.”

In a subsequent post, Sowore revealed that Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) of the FID, Dasuki Galandachi, had informed him of the decision to grant him bail pending the conclusion of the investigation.

“The DIG of FID, Dasuki Galandachi, at the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja had just informed me that he has instructed his personnel to grant me bail, pending the conclusion of the ‘investigation,’” Sowore wrote.

However, he insisted that he would not accept any conditions that he deemed unjust.

“I have also advised the DIG that in accepting ‘bail,’ I will not agree to conditions that compromise my innocence, dignity, and integrity.

“If such unreasonable conditions are imposed, I will choose to remain in detention until I am charged to court. Even then, I know that there is no crime defined or to be investigated—it is just the impunity that has become the hallmark of the @PoliceNG hierarchy.”
