Tinubu Commended For Signing Bill Establishing Varsity In Ogoni Land

In a move hailed as a significant step toward socio-economic progress and reconciliation, President Bola Tinubu has signed the Bill establishing a University Ogoni land in Rivers State.

The landmark decision, which comes amid longstanding calls for increased educational investment in South-South region, has been commended by the Civil Society Coalition for Humanitarian and Empowerment Initiative (CSCHEI).

Director-General of CSCHEI, Kunle Yusuff, described the bill signing as a demonstration of President Tinubu’s deep understanding of conflict resolution and development strategies.

He emphasised that the creation of the university was not only an investment in education but also a catalyst for fostering capacity building, literacy, and sustainable development in the historically marginalized Ogoni community.

“This singular act by President Tinubu marks a new chapter for the Ogoni people and is a major milestone in addressing historical grievances through constructive development,” Yusuff stated.

“We urge civil society organizations, community groups, and non-governmental organizations in Rivers State to collaborate with local communities and government agencies to ensure the seamless implementation of this project.”

The establishment of Ogoni University is expected to address a number of socio-economic challenges by providing enhanced access to quality education, promoting innovation, and equipping future generations with the tools to contribute to local and national development.

The institution also holds symbolic value in the ongoing efforts to heal the rift between the Ogoni people and the federal government, following decades of environmental and socio-political tensions in the region.

CSCHEI has further called on the National Assembly to uphold its oversight role in ensuring the effective implementation of the Bill and the university’s successful operation.

The organisation also acknowledged that the administration’s efforts align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in promoting education, climate action, and inclusive growth.

President Tinubu’s approval has been welcomed by local leaders and civil society actors, many of whom view the university as a crucial step in addressing educational disparities and promoting long-term regional stability.

As Ogoni University begins to take shape, CSCHEI and other stakeholders have expressed optimism that the project will serve as a model of collaboration, accountability, and sustainable development in Nigeria’s resource-rich Niger Delta region.
