Bauchi State Agricultural Development Programme (BSADP) in collaboration with the Women in Trade and Agriculture Cooperative Society has trained 200 women on fish farming techniques to boost fish production.
Programme manager of BSADP, Ya’u Muhammad, said the initiative is aimed at empowering women and diversifying agricultural practices in response to the challenges faced in poultry production.
He said the training focused on practical techniques to improve fish farming, emphasizing the importance of cooperative organisation.
Muhammad encouraged participants to disseminate the knowledge gained to others who could not attend the workshop and utilise the skills for the overall benefit of the people.
A retired director of Agricultural Technical Services at BSADP and one of the resource persons, Dr. Adamu Fada, highlighted key topics covered during the training which included site selection, water sourcing, fish feed selection, feed formulation, record-keeping, integrated fish farming, marketing, and processing techniques.
Dr Fada emphasised the need for practical application of the knowledge acquired, urging participants to seek assistance from extension agents if they encounter challenges during implementation.
The training is expected not only to enhance fish production in Bauchi State but also provide an alternative source of income for the women, contributing to the state’s agricultural development and food security.
