There are no official results yet in the United States midterm elections, as polling stations remain open across most parts of the country.
However, pre-election forecasts and prediction markets indicate that Democrats are strongly positioned to win control of the House of Representatives, with projections suggesting they could gain between 15 and 25 seats.
Democrats are also favoured to make gains in the Senate, although the battle for control of the upper chamber remains more competitive.
Prediction market estimates on Tuesday placed the Democrats’ chances of winning the House above 90 per cent, while their chances of taking the Senate were also above 70 per cent.
The first polling stations are scheduled to close at 6pm Eastern Time (11pm Nigerian time), when initial vote counts are expected to begin emerging.
The outcome of the elections will determine which party controls both chambers of Congress and shape the legislative agenda for the remainder of President Donald Trump’s term.
