Team of BioRTC experts while collecting water, fish, soil and other samples for research to unravel the root cause of kidney in Yobe

As part of efforts towards unraveling the root cause of the kidney disease bedeviling people, a team o f experts from the Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre (BioRTC) supported by the Yobe State government have collected several samples including water, soil, vegetable, fish among many others in Bade local government area.

A team, affiliated with the Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre (BioRTC) in the Yobe State University led by the Special Adviser on Science, Research and Innovation, Dr. Mahmoud Bukar Maina who doubled as the Director of BioRTC were in Gashu’a farmlands among many areas geared towards gathering the necessary sample that will aid in the research.

A statement from the Information Officer of the Yobe State University, Abdulmuminu Kolo Gulani said Dr. Maina has while speaking stated that “As part of the research, the Environment Team will collect sand, water, vegetables and other perishable foods produced in Gashua as part of the effort to find out the root causes of kidney disease in Bade.”

Also, the Co-lead of the Environment Team, Dr Usman Bawa said, “After the field work, we will be able to apply high level statistical analysis to uncover the relationship between the level of heavy metals or contaminants in these samples and kidney disease risk using scientifically established methods.”

To further encourage the project, the commissioner, Yobe State Ministry of Health and Human Services, Dr. Muhammad Lawan Gana has during the week visited the team at the site reiterating that the state government under the able leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni remained determined to developing an implementation plan for the lasting solution to the kidney disease in Bade and other parts of the state.

The commissioner has in a statement from the Information Officer of the Yobe State University, Abdulmuminu Kolo Gulani said Gana made the assertion while supervising the ongoing Kidney Research Data Collection in Gashu’a the headquarter of Bade Local Government Area of the state.
The commissioner said Governor Buni is worried about the menace of rampant kidney failure in the area, stressing that immediately after the findings, the Yobe State government will develop an implementation plan that will bring a lasting solution to the people.

“We are doing all we could to restore the well-being of the people.”

The Commissioner used the medium to commend Governor Buni for giving priority attention to the health sector in the state.

Briefing the commissioner, the Special Adviser on Science, Research and Innovation, Dr. Mahmoud Bukar Maina, who is also the Director of Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre (BioRTC) a center working on the root cause of the disease informed the Commissioner that the people of Bade Emirate are given the required cooperation.

Also, the Director Primary Health Care Bade, Yerima Sheriff Dalah and Dr. Salamatu Ahmad Amshi, said there was substantial progress on samples and specimens collection on the project across the Base area.
The Commissioner equally visited the scenes of data and specimen collections, which includes blood and urine samples for Kidney function test, genetic testing, heavy metals analysis, among others.
