‘You Restored My Rank, My Honour, Did A Lot For Nigeria’, Gowon Hails IBB At Book Launch

A former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), has expressed gratitude to ex-Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retd.), for restoring his military rank and honour, as well as for his contributions to Nigeria’s development.

Gowon made the statement on Thursday in Abuja during the launch of an autobiography of Babangida.

“I had a very rough time in government; I was even charged for treason,” Gowon recalled. “Later on, President Shagari rescinded that order, and you (IBB), in the end, restored my rank and honour. You did quite a lot for the country.”

LEADERSHIP recalls that Gowon was ousted as Head Of State following the 1976 coup. But, after the failed coup led by Col. Buka Dimka months later, in which the then Head of State, General Murtala Muhammed, was assassinated, the military government led by General Olusegun Obasanjo at the time dismissed Gowon from the Nigerian Army.

However, in 1981, President Shehu Shagari pardoned him, and six years later, Gen. Babangida reinstated his military rank and benefits.

The book launch attracted a distinguished audience, including former leaders and top dignitaries. Among them was former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), who spoke glowingly of Babangida and their long-standing friendship.

“My relationship with Ibrahim has gone a long way—over 80 years,” Abubakar remarked. “Ibrahim, I want to thank you again for your friendship and brotherhood. No moment goes by when we remember our escapades without bringing smiles to our faces. May these smiles continue during our twilight.”

Former President Goodluck Jonathan also praised Babangida for his literary contribution, stating that the book will serve as an important historical record for Nigeria.

“If you contribute to the documentation of history, it makes your history stronger, more relevant,” Jonathan said. “So, today, you’re helping us.”

The event drew a mix of past and present leaders, highlighting Babangida’s enduring influence in Nigeria’s political and historical landscape.
