North East Development Commission (NEDC) has began the distribution relief items comprising thousands of bags of rice , sugar , cartons of vegetable oil and spaghetti requested by the wife of the President, Sen Remi Tinubu from the Commission to the six North-east Governors’ wives.
The state coordinator of the commission, Engr Mohammed Umar, disclosed the distribution of the items by Senator Remi Tinubu through the NEDC at the weekend in Maiduguri while making a presentation to the wife of Borno State Governor Dr Falmata Babagana Zulum for the less privileged in the state.
He said the gesture was extended to the governors’ wives in six states in the northeast, adding that palliatives were normally given to the needy and downtrodden directly in the area.
“This is also connected with that because in some cases where palliative are given in different segments, some will come through the NEDC directly, some will go to the state government for onward distribution to the needy, but this time around because the First Lady, Her Excellency Mrs Remi Tinubu had pleaded with the commission that this gesture should be extended to the wives of the state governors and that was what necessitated the donation to governors’ wives in the region.”
He said a total of 9,000 items, comprising 3000 bags of rice,2000 cartons of spaghetti, 2000 cartons of vegetable oil, and 2000 bags of sugar, would go to the Borno State Governor’s wife for distribution to the needy, while the wives of the governors of the other five states would receive according to their needs there.
He said the Commission has donated billions of naira in food and non-food items to the Borno people alone since 2024 Ramadan.
He said the NEDC had provided essential supplies to the affected communities in the September 10, 2024 flood disaster including over 40,000 bags of rice within 12 months.
Responding, the governor’s wife, who was represented by Dr Hauwa Mai Musa, the Special Adviser to Zulum on Women Affairs, expressed appreciation to the management of NEDC for the gesture.
