The Kano State government has called on President Bola Tinubu to order the removal of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, from the Nasarawa Palace of the Kano Emirate, warning that his continued presence was fuelling unrest in the State.

Speaking at the Kano Government House during the distribution of relief materials provided by Tarauni Federal Constituency Representative in the House of Representatives, Hon. Kabiru Dahiru Sule, the deputy governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo reiterated the administration’s stance, urging the President to intervene immediately.

“We are calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remove the Emir he enthroned and kept in a graveyard,” Gwarzo stated, in an apparent reference to the Nasarawa mini-palace where deceased Kano Emirs are customarily laid to rest.

He condemned the presence of security forces around the palace and other parts of Kano metropolis, accusing them of using teargas and even live ammunition against peaceful protesters.

“The people of Kano, especially the youth, are tired of this nonsense. It is shocking that in a democratic setting, security forces are being deployed to fire teargas at peaceful protesters, with some reports even alleging the use of live ammunition,” he said.

“But we want to make it clear that there is no intimidation. This is a democracy, and democracy must be upheld, whether some people like it or not. We stand firmly with the youth who take to the streets to express their grievances,” he added.

The deputy governor asserted that only Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has the constitutional authority to appoint an Emir in Kano Emirate.

“The president should remove the emir he appointed and take him to his own state. Kano already has an Emir, and that is Muhammadu Sanusi II. No one else has the power to impose an Emir on Kano,” he declared.

He accused certain individuals of leveraging Emir Bayero’s presence at the Nasarawa Palace to create political instability, which he said was hampering the state government’s ability to function effectively.

Gwarzo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, emphasising that the same legal process that led to Bayero’s removal had now reinstated Sanusi II.

LEADERSHIP recalls that security operatives sealed access to the Nasarawa mini-palace on Wednesday, causing traffic congestion following intelligence reports of a planned protest around the area.

The Police also disclosed that 17 suspected thugs were arrested in connection with the unrest, adding that investigations were ongoing.
