One Killed, 5 Injured In Ilorin Petrol Tanker Crash

One person was killed out of the 11 travellers  involved in the auto accident that occurred at Iyemaja village near Oko-Olowo along Ilorin-Jebba expressway on Friday, LEADERSHIP Sunday investigation has shown.

Our correspondent gathered yesterday that the accident which occurred at about 8.30am involved a petroleum tanker and an articulated truck conveying fertiliser.

The spokesman of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said the driver of the truck died in the incident.

Five other persons sustained injuries while five escaped unhurt.

A source at one of the agencies involved in the rescue operation said two children, a male and a female, and three adults were among those injured.

He added that the injured persons were receiving treatment at undisclosed hospitals, and only one person died in the accident.

“The petrol tanker was carrying 33,000 liters of premium motor spirit (PMS), while the articulated truck was loaded with fertiliser. Upon arrival, firefighters immediately took action to contain the fire and prevent further damage. Their swift intervention ensured that the fertiliser cargo was salvaged.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred when the articulated truck attempted to overtake the petrol tanker. In the process, it struck the rear of the tanker, causing a fuel spill that ignited. Tragically, the driver of the articulated truck was trapped and lost his life,” fire service officials said.
