A public school teacher suspected to belong to one of the cult groups in Akwa Ibom State has been arrested and charged to court for attacking a minor with a machete, nearly cutting off his wrist.
The 11-year-old victim, LEADERSHIP learnt, who is a Junior Secondary School 2 (JSS2) pupil of Comprehensive High School (CHS), Ndiya, in Nsit Ubium local government area of the State, got the machete attack in lieu of escaping being flogged by his computer teacher.
A teacher, who would not want his name in print, recalled seeing “the teacher and the young pupil in an argument over a minor offence that should have attracted minor punishment of canning, picking pieces of papers or cutting a portion of grass.”
“But, the computer teacher, resorted to attacking the pupil who had since been hospitalised over a deep machete cut to his wrist inflicted after he succeeded in escaping the flogging,” he added.
“The same teacher is notorious for inflicting machete cuts and attacking students with a knife within the school premises, and the school authority has been ignoring his excesses until this one after the parents had threatened petition,” Affiong Bassey, a resident of the community and neighbour to the school, stated.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John, who confirmed the incident, described it as sad, disclosing that the commissioner of Police (CP), Baba Azare, with zero tolerance for crime of any sort, was very miffed over the case, adding that the law would take its course.
“The case has been investigated, concluded and handed over to the Court, that’s what I can say for now since the matter is already before the court,” he stressed.
