In a groundbreaking move for environmental sustainability, Nigeria held its inaugural net-zero sporting event, the SustainabiliTee Golf Greensome Tournament, at Ikoyi Club 1938.

Formerly known as The Green Tee Golf Kitty, the tournament marks a significant milestone after over a decade of advocacy by event promoter, organisers of the Diplomatic Games Week and Trade Relations Cup.

The event aligns with the United Nations Sports for Climate Action Framework and aims to promote several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDGs 13, 14, 15, and 17.

Key state institutions, such as the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency and the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, have lent their support to the initiative.

Sòókò Deji Ajomale-McWord, CEO of Diplomacy Publishing, emphasized the tournament’s commitment to sustainability by prohibiting the use of plastic tee pegs and restricting participants from bringing plastic bottles beyond designated refreshment areas.

Violators of these rules face penalties, underscoring the event’s serious stance against plastic pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

“This tournament is an audacious attempt to advance campaigns against plastic pollution,” Ajomale-McWord stated, reflecting on the challenges faced in garnering support for sustainability in Nigeria.

He expressed gratitude to the government agencies and corporate sponsors that made the event possible.

Former deputy governor of Lagos State, Otunba Femi Pedro, praised the initiative and highlighted the unique position of golf as an environmentally friendly sport.

“Golf is a sport rich in greenery and fresh air,” he remarked, noting the critical need for ongoing environmental awareness in Lagos, a densely populated state grappling with plastic waste.

Following a tree-planting ceremony on the golf course, Dr. Joseph Onoja, Director-General of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, commended the effort, stating, “Citizens are taking action into their hands to green our cities.” He emphasized the importance of nurturing the newly planted trees to ensure they thrive and contribute to the ecosystem.

Among the tournament participants was former Nigerian footballer Jonathan Akpoborie, who reflected on the changing climate conditions compared to his youth, expressing concern over environmental degradation.

Dr. Tunde Ajayi shared his optimism for future events, highlighting the potential for sports to promote sustainability.

His enthusiasm was echoed by representatives from LASEPA, who expressed hope for increased participation from government and international organizations in the next edition of the tournament.

The SustainabiliTee Golf Greensome Tournament represents a significant step towards integrating sports and environmental conservation in Nigeria, paving the way for future initiatives aimed at fostering a sustainable future.
